2006 Campaign Update
The 2006 Brown County United Way campaign has raised more than $505,000 so far. This exceeds 2005 totals by 11 percent when compared to similar totals from last year.
"This is an apples to apples comparison, which means we calculate the percentages on a per company basis," said Alicia Van Straten, campaign manager. "Because some companies conclude their campaigns at different times of the year, this is the only objective way to track where our campaign is."
Some companies have doubled or even tripled their giving this year, which is something Van Straten attributes to a strong base of volunteers and a giving community.
"We have a great group of Loaned Executives and Employee Campaign Coordinators, and I think the entire community is really getting behind this campaign," Van Straten said.
Roughly 16 percent of the projected campaign total has been received. This is slightly behind campaign totals from a similar time last year.

The Brown County United Way is granting $70,000 to six programs in Brown County from funds received in late 2005.
Those receiving money are:
-  New Community Shelter & American Foundation of Counseling Services; Mental Health and Substance Abuse Counseling; $15,300.
-  Brown County Homeless and Housing Coalition; Churches Offering Temporary Shelter (COTS); $14,700.
-  NEW Community Clinic; Medication for uninsured; $14,232.
-  Family Services of Northeast Wisconsin; Smart Parenting; $9,840.
-  NEW Community Clinic; Prescription assistance; $9,321.
-  Greater Green Bay YMCA; Girls' Night Out Retreat; $6,607.
"We could have waited to distribute these funds in our next allocation cycle, but we wanted to get this money working in our community right away," said Steve Van Vuren, Brown County United Way Board Chairman.
A total of 28 programs applied for the funds through a United Way grant-giving mechanism know as a Community Response Fund. The
mechanism is designed to provide onetime funding for programs that address critical emerging needs in Brown County.
The selected programs underwent a strict process of review by a Community Response Fund committee comprised of BCUW board member and impact council volunteers. The committee's recommendation was reviewed and approved by a Community Impact Committee prior to submission to the board of directors, which approved the final allocations Wednesday.
"We want to make sure that we are covering all our community's needs," Van Vuren said.
The grant money became available when the BCUW Board of Directors voted in mid-August to place funds leftover from the 2005 campaign into a Community Response Fund, which allowed any health and human services program in Brown County to apply for the money.

Packers vs. Patriots game
All proceeds go to the BCUW 2006 campaign
Randy Gunderson, a Florida business owner, placed the winning bid of $5,200 to enjoy the Packers home game versus the New England Patriots from a skybox at Lambeau Field.
The box was donated by Foth & Van Dyke to the Brown County United Way to raise funds for the campaign. The United Way put the box up for grabs to the highest bidder in an online auction, which ended Thursday evening at 4 p.m.
Gunderson, owner of Gundy Ditributors in Punta Gorda, Florida, said he learned about the opportunity to bid on the skybox through a Green Bay Press-Gazette article, which he received electronically via Google alerts.
"I like to get any news I can about the Packers," Gunderson said. "My family are big fans. This seemed like a great opportunity."
Gunderson also has friends and family in the Green Bay area who he'll invite to the game, he said.
The package includes skybox seating with 18 tickets for the November 19 home game against the New England Patriots. Winners will also have access to unlimited beer, wine, soda, water, subs, fruit, pasta salad, brats, popcorn, snack bar and wraps.
The total value of the package has been estimated by Foth & Van Dyke at $9,700

Green Bay has
“one of the worst rates in the state”
Despite a 31 percent decline statewide in the teen birth rate between 1991 and 2004, teen childbearing in Wisconsin cost taxpayers (federal, state and local) at least $156 million in 2004, according to an analysis recently released by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy.
The report shows that taxpayers in Wisconsin paid for costs associated with children born to teen mothers in 2004 including:
-  $23 million for public health care (Medicaid & SCHIP)
-  $38 million for child welfare
-  $50 million for incarcerations
-  $41 million in lost tax revenue due to increased earnings and spending
In October 2006, the Brown County United Way released four Community Conditions Reports researching the following categories of inquiry: Basic Needs, Children and Families, Health and Wellness and Youth Development.
Data within the reports reflect the impact of economic changes, population shifts and other important variables on the lives of Brown County residents.
Information for the reports has been furnished by the research firm The Martec Group - Green Bay.

than $570
Kicking off Oct. 31, staff at the Brown County United Way out kicked, out dressed and outwitted each other, and generally laughed their way to raising more than $570 in special events for the 2006 United Way campaign.
Loaned Executives (LE) put on a special United Way version of “Deal or no Deal”, in which Toni Loch's shrewd gamesmanship garnered $225 dollars for the campaign, donated by the LEs.
Other highlights included a stiffly competitive round of penny wars, Halloween costume and door décor contests, kickball, build your own gourmet caramel apples and, of course, the ever popular plinko
WBAY spiced up their campaign with the penny wars. The Frogs and The Pirates were two of four teams that competed.
