2006 Campaign Kicked Off In Style
More than 400 attended the Brown County United Way 2006 Campaign Kickoff Thursday, Sept. 7 at Lambeau Field. Attendees learned about 19 United Way-funded agencies as they grooved to the Ashwaubenon High School jazz band and hobnobbed with Bob Harlan and Packers players.
Keynote speakers included Packers President and Chairman Bob Harlan, Associated Banc-Corp President and CEO Paul Beideman and BCUW President and CEO Toni Loch. Special appearances included Packers Players Mark Tauscher, Nick Collins, Corey Williams and Ruvell Martin.
Silent auctions and raffles raised funds for the attending agencies and the Brown County United Way. Prizes included a signed Packers helmet signed by Brett Favre, a Packers hat signed by Mike McCarthy and much more.

As adults, many of us can still hear our parents dutifully asking, "Did you remember to brush your teeth?" right before we went to bed.
With oral hygiene a focal point consistently important throughout the years, it is no wonder that nearly all of us have used this hackneyed phrase as a barometer of success for our mornings and nights.
Understanding this importance, the Brown County United Way partnered with the N.E.W. Community Clinic and Bellin College of Nursing to put the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) dental initiative in motion.
The initiative was launched in October 2005 after extensive research by the United Way's Health and
Wellness Impact Council, chaired by Joyce McCollum of Bellin Health.  The initiative targets low-income children under age six and their mothers who are enrolled in the program.
Nursing students are trained to provide one-on-one dental education to WIC clients, and a registered nurse applies a fluoride treatment to children's teeth by appointment.
The students, all unpaid volunteers, are given a great opportunity to not only complete part of their clinical placement, but also to understand the specific needs of the low-income population and minority groups alike.
Make an Impact. GIVE.
Founded in 1925, the Brown County United Way is the single largest fund raising organization in Brown County.  As a private, nonprofit corporation, the BCUW raises funds through its annual workplace campaign, corporate sponsorship, foundations, grants, and major gifts.
With the help of more than 100 community volunteers, the Brown County United Way is dedicated to finding solutions to the community's most pressing human services issues.

More than 100 Employee Campaign Coordinators learned about the Brown County United Way and shared their experiences during two training sessions in August. These volunteers represented a broad cross-sectionof active, community-minded businesses here in Brown County.
Participants learned how to navigate the new ECC Online Toolbox, to use streamlined campaign accounting tools and how to make giving part of team building and just having a good time at work.
A few lucky people even won door prizes.

September 10 to 16 is National Suicide Prevention Week, and the Crisis Center of Family Services in Brown County, in conjunction with the American Association of Suicidology, will be promoting its services as part of the national campaign.
Suicide Prevention Week is designed to promote awareness and advocacy about suicide prevention across the country. Through the campaign, agencies like the Crisis Center hope to work with community members to reduce the incidence of suicides and prevent individuals from becoming suicidal.
More than 1 million people of all races and age groups die by suicide worldwide each year, which amounts to one suicide every 40 seconds. Many more will make suicide attempts.
Facts About Suicide:
- Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States, with one suicide occurring on average every 17 minutes.
- Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among 15 to 24-year-olds.
- Wisconsin ranks number 26 in the nation for its suicide rate.
- Suicide is completed by more men than women and more whites than non-whites.
- 790,000 Americans attempt suicide each year.
- An estimated 4.45 million Americans are survivors of the suicide of a friend, family member or loved one.
For more information about suicide awareness or the services provided by the Crisis center, contact the Crisis Center of Family Services, 24 hours a day, at 920-436-8888.

The Brown County United Way and Family Services are sponsoring Home Visitation: The Basics on September 18, 19, and 20.  This two-and-a-half day training is funded through the Brown County United Way and the Community Partnership for Children as a means of building our community's capacity to serve more families in need of voluntary home visitation services, which is a significant unmet need.  Participants will not be charged an enrollment fee, which would normally be $275 per person.  CEU credit is available.
The training is free and open to 25 people.  Remaining slots are limited. The deadline to register is Wednesday, September 13.  Qualified participants include those employed by a local organization that is either already conducting home visits or would like to offer this service in the future.  Participants will agree to help serve families with new babies who would benefit from home visits.  The agreement will be informal and based on participants' availability.
Trainers are provided through the UW-Extension office in Madison.  The training is designed for home visitors from health- and community-based agencies providing support and information to families with an infant or toddler to promote healthy development, parent-child interaction and family functioning.  The training will be held at the Encompass Cornerstone Center at 345 North Broadway in Green Bay.  Breakfast and lunch will be provided.
To register, contact Sarah Inman, Community Impact Manager, at: sarah@browncountyunitedway.org

Ray and Laverne love to get out and socialize. Whether its playing cards and bingo, going for walks or just having lunch with friends, they say it's a great time to be a senior in Brown County.
And they both agree that their lifestyle wouldn't be possible without the Salvation Army Senior Citizens program.
"For us, the Senior Citizens program is a great way to see our best friends, and to meet new ones too," Laverne said. "There is just such a nice bunch of people there."
