Some smiles come naturally. For Trystan, just a simple grin can be a struggle. But his eyes show all you need to know.
"He's quite the joker," said Trystan's mother, Rhonda. "We all love that about him."
Trystan was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at age three. He uses a wheelchair to get around and a talking board to communicate. But just like his laughing eyes, Trystan doesn't let anything get in his way.
According to his mother, a big part of Trystan's independence comes from his experiences with ASPIRO, a United Way-funded agency that provides services to Brown County residents with disabilities.
"I don't know what we would have done without ASPIRO," Rhonda said. "They help Trystan to be independent in a way that he would never have been."
ASPIRO programs have helped Rhonda, too. Thanks to your donations to the Brown County United Way, Rhonda receives ASPIRO's Respite Care, a supportive service designed to give care to children and adults with developmental disabilities. For Rhonda, this means having the ability to go shopping, getting to work on time or just having a break in the daily routine.
"The respite care we receive from ASPIRO is so important for us," Rhonda said. "And Trystan really benefits from this program too, because it provides another way for him to be social."
If you ask Trystan about ASPIRO, you'll get a big smile.
And Rhonda agrees, "without their help, our lives would be much harder."
Thank you for giving.
