Program/Service Description:
The Green Bay Correctional Institution is a maximum-security correctional facility that is administered by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, Division of Adult Institutions. It is centrally located in Brown County between Green Bay, De Pere and the Fox and East Rivers. Correspondence to Inmates, NO MONEY: Green Bay Correctional Institution, P.O. OTHER: Work Programs – maintenance, food service, institution stores, yard crew, bathroom, clothing and linen exchange, carpentry, painting, library, masonry, health services, janitor, clerk and messenger, Sex Offender Group, Alcoholics Anonymous, Self Help – Life Management Skills, Cognitive Intervention Challenger and Possibilities. Blood-Related to Inner-City Children through K "Communications" – inmate group providing information for at risk youth. SPECIAL HISTORICAL NOTES AND OTHER INSTITUTIONAL INFORMATION GBCI, authorized by the Wisconsin Legislature in 1897, began operation in 1898, as the Wisconsin State Reformatory. The original parcel of land consisted of approximately 200 acres. By 1922, the facilities included the North Cell Hall, the Main Administration Building and the South Cell Hall. In 1923, a concrete wall was erected to encompass the main compound of the Reformatory, whose name was changed to the Green Bay Correctional Institution on July 1, 1979. GBCI is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
