Program/Service Description:
Provides information about the following: available services, new technologies for accessibility, community supports and services, how to relate to people who are deaf, deaf/blind and have a hearing loss, and laws relating to the rights of people who are deaf, deaf/blind and hard of haring. Referrals made to appropriate community supports and services. Consults with service provides to modify programs or policies to make supports and services accessible. Provides training to deaf, deaf/blind and hard of hearing people. Supplies information on the Telecommunications Equipment Purchase Program (TEPP) which provides assistance to purchase specialized home equipment for deaf and hard of hearing. The money can be used to purchase TTYs, amplified phones, hands-free speaker phone, puff activator, phone signaling system etc. See Telecommunications Assistance Program (TAP) for further information. The Bureau also has information on the Service Fund. This Service Fund can be used to pay for interpreting services for AA meetings for one person for a maximum of 26 meetings per year. It can pay for sign language interpreters, real time captioning and other services not covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
