Program/Service Description:
The BRICK Program is a prevention program designed to deter teenagers from participating in negative behavior that could ultimately lead to incarceration. The goal is to discourage all youth from negative behavior patterns by emphasizing the importance of positive decision making. Started in May of 1989. Inmates at Green Bay Correctional Institution were concerned about the direction taken by many inter-city teens. Must be referred by caseworker or social worker. During each program 15 young men, as well as approximately 5 adult chaperons are permitted to participate in the program. Every participant entering the program is expected to go through a security check which includes mental detector screening. Following the screening the participants are escorted to 1 of the cell halls. There is an opportunity to view a cell while an inmate describes institutional living arrangements. Participants are then escorted to the inmate shower area and finally to a visitors room or classroom for the program itself. Approximately 4-6 inmates will present individual stories. This is followed by a short break. The inmates then offer small group discussions with the teens.
