Program/Service Description:
The Council is dedicated to improving the independence, productivity and integration of people with a developmental disability. The council also plans ways to improve support for people with developmental disabilities, advocates for their civil rights and plans ways that communities can increase their capacity to be welcoming, supportive, affirming places for people with developmental disabilities. Other initiatives: listens to concerns and ideas of families and people with developmental disabilities, educates communities, recommends changes in State and Federal laws, and supports improvements in the service system. The Council is also responsible for Disability Advocates: Wisconsin Network (DAWN). DAWN is a cross-disability, grassroots, statewide network of people who care about disability issues. The focus is on issues affecting people with any kind of disability and includes people with disabilities, family members, friends, organizations and others. There is a website (www.dawninfo.org), email network, and policy forums on current disability issues, leadership training for people with disabilities and their family members who want to organize advocacy projects and there are grants to help previously trained advocates organize advocacy projects. Must be developmentally disabled or family member to qualify for DAWN grants.
